Buying a piano stool.
You should always purchase a quality piano stool. We consider our piano stools to be the best available. Each one is hand finished to the highest standards. A poor quality stool that rocks from side to side will not help your playing and is a poor investment.
Correct posture.
Without the correct posture you cannot enjoy the piano to its fullest. Your playing will suffer as you try to overcome the problems of correct hand placement whilst sitting incorrectly. Your concentration will also suffer as that aching back or stiff shoulders distract you. You may even suffer from ailments associated with sitting incorrectly. The correct posture is the first step in playing the piano correctly and is sadly often overlooked.
Correct height.
You should consider the height of the piano stool. A fixed height piano stool is normally fine for the average height adult. To get an idea of how the stool will feel try using a dinning chair or stool of a similar height. If it is slightly lower you can sit on some large books to get the correct height but be careful not to slip off. Your hands should fall readily to the keys with your forearms parallel to the floor whilst keeping your back straight. If players of differing heights will be using the stool then consider an adjustable piano stool for greater flexibility.
Solo or Duet.
If you intend to play duets, now or in the future then a duet piano stool will be required. These can of course be used for solo playing and are nice if you just prefer a little more space with your piano stool. For teaching we have a double seat duet piano stool. Each pad can be adjusted separately so you and your student can both be at the correct height.
Music storage.
Under seat storage is useful for keeping all of those important music books, scores and scribbled notes tidy. A piano is a thing of beauty and looks much better if it's not piled high with books and papers.
